Elephant Squad

Spenta Elephant Squad Activities

1.Formation of Elephant squad at Diana Range (Youth employed from local villages after proper training from forest department).
2.Bolero vehicle with trained driver for joint patrolling activities with forest department to mitigate human elephant conflict issues.
3.Bolero vehicle with trained driver at Moraghat Range (which also has a wetland) for effective patrolling to control illicit felling of trees in the range.
4.Daily joint patrolling with forest team to mitigate human elephant conflict issue.
5.⁠Providing safe passage to elephants, when they venture out from forest areas into human settlements/ farms, especially during paddy/corn and other harvesting periods.
6.Managing people during the elephants’ presence in tea gardens/ villages/roads etc.
7.⁠Protecting human life, property and crops by mitigating conflict between elephants and humans with forest team.
8.Training and creating awareness among local villagers on what preventive action can be taken at their end and how to protect their farms and homes, without causing any harm to elephants.
9.⁠The Spenta Elephant Squad is not only involved in patrolling and keeping a watch on elephant movements, but also keeps a track of elephant counts in forest areas and outside forests.  This helps to identify issues related to wildlife and forest fragmentation for a scientific approach towards mitigation.
10.The Spenta squad, along with the forest department team, has been controlling fires in the forest to minimise damage.
11.⁠The Spenta squad ferries students safely from their villages to their examination centres during their state board exams to ensure there are no unwanted encounters with wildlife.
12.⁠The Spenta elephant squad works with forest department to ferry injured animals in the Diana and nearby ranges to the nearest medical centre.
13.The squad ⁠assists the forest team during crop raids by elephants.
14.The Spenta Elephant Squad assists in rescue operations of injured animals/snakes / birds from human settlements and safely moves/relocates them towards forest areas, jointly with the forest team.
15.The squad provides basic infrastructure facilities to the forest range.
16.Spenta squad carries out plantation & cleaning activities in Diana, Dalgaon, Bandapani, Chalsa Forest Range, covering an area of 32 hectares with 35000 plants.

17.The Spenta team conducts regular training programmes at schools and junior colleges to create more awareness on forests, wildlife and human elephant conflict issues

18. An assistant vet has been employed to provide medical support at Jaldapara National Park.
